  • The world’s largest retailer Walmart has requested all of its suppliers of fresh, leafy greens to use blockchain technology to trace their products by 2019

  • The move comes after 2018 reported a large outbreak of E. coli in romaine lettuce, which originated from Yuma, Arizona

  • The letter sent out to suppliers details how Walmart will work with IBM’s Food Trust network to improve farm-to-table transparency

  • Frank Yiannas, VP of Food Safety at Walmart commented, “None of the bags of salad had ‘Yuma, Arizona’ on them. In the future, using the technology we’re requiring, a customer could potentially scan a bag of salad and know with certainty where it came from”

  • Yiannas added, “When it comes to safety, this is not a competitive issue, we all win or lose together.”
